I went out to do my first burrowing owl transect this morning (since y'all
are seeing them further south), but found none yet on the acreage assigned
to me. I did observe this amusing incident:

The Lagerman osprey couple is determinedly ignoring the new-and-improved
nest pole which the County put up for them this winter. Instead, they are
attempting to build on the telephone pole closest to the east sheds on the
old turkey farm property (an HCA: must be permitted to enter, but you can
observe from Prospect Rd). The ospreys would go off to get sticks in the
cottonwoods; while they were gone, a watching raven would hop onto the stick
pile and start tossing the sticks to the ground. Then he'd go loaf around
for a bit while they reconstructed as best they could, and return to do
demolition as soon as he could.

I hope the osprey give up on that spot, which is hopeless, and turn back to
the tried and true (but slightly strange) rebuilt platform. There was also
an immature RT hawk and an active harrier in the area, but no sign of the
local bald eagle pair.
