Dave and I (and a few other birders) saw perhaps 100 American White Pelicans on Jim Hamm Nature Center pond Thursday early afternoon, along with about 30 avocets, 5 Great Blue Herons, other shorebirds, ducks, coots. A bald eagle (immature) circled above the pond a couple of times, making a dive for a large fish (leaving without it). It certainly caused an uproar on the pond. The avocets flew away, but did return before long. Other birds were certainly on alert. One heron and several pelicans approached the fish as well, but none really tried to take it on. The Nature Center is on the east side of Longmont, at 17th and County Line Road, in Boulder County.

Spotted one American White Pelican riding a thermal above the farm

pelican I have seen this year!
