Cobirders,
A walk around Neenoshe Reservoir (Kiowa County) this afternoon produced
11 species of shorebirds. On the west shore, I found three Hudsonian
Godwits, drawn by the froth at the edge of the water stirred up by
strong northeast winds. Two were breeding-plumaged males, one a
breeding-plumaged female. One of the males was banded on the upper
portion of both legs--bright orange-red on the left leg, and bright
green on the right. If anyone either knows biologists who may have
banded this bird, or who to contact, I would appreciate assistance. I'm
sure this sighting would be highly interesting, due to how rare this
species is in Colorado at any season.
Best birder access is from US 287 between Wiley and Eads. The west boat
ramp is north of Cottonwood Road (Kiowa County Road 41.2). Go east until
it is clear you will get stuck in mud by proceeding farther.
