After grousing about the paucity of birds at Lake Estes for the last two
weeks, yesterday turned out to be a banner day in terms of both numbers and
the number of species. I don't know if I have ever seen more birds around
the lake. The best birds were probably a Grasshopper Sparrow and a Wood
Duck. The highlights were 140 White-faced Ibis (no Glossy but a couple may
have had bands), over 200 Franklin Gulls, 6 Avocets, 200 Vesper Sparrows, 60
Wilson's Snipe (they were everywhere), 3 Willets, 4 Least Sandpipers, a
Western Sandpipers, a Baird's Sandpiper, FOY Spotted Sandpipers, a Marsh
Wren, 8 Yellow-headed Blackbirds, FOY Green-tailed Towhee, and FOY Brewer's
Sparrow. Susan Ward and I totaled at least 66 species.
