On my way down to Lamar yesterday, I stopped mid-afternoon at Last Chance. It
had a good assortment of common migrants, the best being two White-throated
Sparrows, a Green-tailed Towhee, and a Hermit Thrush.

Today I hit all the normal spots within 5 mile radius of downtown Lamar
(Prowers). My impression is that spring is very "behind" for this date. In
some ways Fort Collins seems as far along in terms of new leaves. I think the
operating factor is the extreme drought going on in southeast CO.

Highlights today:

Willow Valley Subdivision in Lamar east of Willow Creek Park:
White-winged Dove (at least 4)
Red-bellied Woodpecker (1 male)

Fairmount Cemetery:
Red-bellied Woodpecker (1 male)
Chipping Sparrow (several)
Lark Sparrow (few)
essentially no warblers

Thurston Reservoir:
Clark's Grebe (few)
Eared Grebe (50+)
Snow Goose (3 lingering individuals)
[major "messing around" in the formerly beautiful cattail marsh on the
east side (where the Least Bitterns were last summer), prescribed fire,
dirtwork, canal and rock scooping]

Lamar Community College Woods:
*Nashville Warbler (male eastern)
Northern Cardinal (at least 2m, 1f)
Wilson's Warbler (1m)
Chukar (an obvious escape/release)

CR13 where it crosses the Arkansas River e of Lamar:
"Wild" Turkey (heard)
Field Sparrow (heard)
Brown Thrasher (several)

Miscellaneous Observations:
Western Kingbirds are trickling in, Chimney Swifts are over downtown, Cassin's
Sparrows (1) heard in the sand sage southeast of town, Burrowing Owls are back,
Vesper Sparrows are the default sparrow on the prairie, White-crowned Sparrows
(mostly gambelii) are abundant, few Orange-crowned Warblers, almost all the
warbler activity (which is minimal and mostly Yellow-rumps) is in hackberry and
cottonwood, no ibis, no shorebirds, no vireos, no tanagers, no grosbeaks, no
buntings, no orioles, no kinglets.
