Michael Kiessig, Rob Raker, and myself spent the morning at Red Rocks
and Bear Creek Lake Park (BCLP). Highlights @Red Rocks Trading Post
feeders:
Curve-billed Thrasher
Slate-colored Fox Sparrow
Golden-crowned, Harris's, & Gambel's White-crowned (6) Sparrows plus
Song Sparrows.
Green-tailed (1) & Spotted Towhees
Lazuli Bunting - 6 males
Juncos - several Pink-sided and one Gray-headed
We did not see either of the White-throated Sparrows - maybe they have
moved on. I expect some of the other Zonotrichia sparrows will be
leaving in the next week.
At Ship Rock we observed the male Peregrine come in and land high on
the rock. After some calling, the female emerged from the eyrie and
perched on a rock just above the eyrie; the male then came in and
they mated after which the male flew off and then came back around and
landed at the eyrie. A short time later the female came back and the
two exchanged places again and the male flew and landed on a snag on
the west hillside. Also had an American Kestrel on a ledge on Ship
Rock.
Several days ago I saw the Male Prairie Falcon come into their eyrie
at Park Cave Rock and the two switched places.
BCLP
large numbers of Yellow-rumped Warblers - almost all male - 50-50
split between Audubon's and Myrtle.
Sparrows included Savannah (2), Vesper, Chipping(large #'s), and Song.
Sora Rail - feeding in shallow water providing great looks.
Cooper's Hawk perched on edge of nest.
Pair of Swainson's Hawks, which have returned to their territory south
of the Stables.
Checked out some of snowy owlets in some of the Great Horned Owl nests
(we know of 4 in BCLP).
Pair of Eared Grebes
Couple of American Pipits
All in all a very enjoyable morning.
