This weekend we went to Crow Valley campground to spend mothers day
birding but since all the campsites were either reserved or taken we
decided to bird a little then head out. The highlights include:
15-25 Western Kingbirds
1 Eastern Kingbird
3 Yellow Warblers
1 Orange-crowned Warbler
2 House Wrens
7 Gambles White-crowned Sparrows
12-17 Chipping Sparrows
1 Lark Sparrow
13 Brown Thrashers
1 Northern Mockingbird
To me right now seems like a drought in the Pawnee area and in Crow
Valley maybe because of the burn? But it was great for Brown
Thrashers! They were everywhere. Also scattered Throughout the prairie
were 6 Loggerhead Shrikes another big number. On the auto guided bird
loop we saw:
4 Vesper Sparrows
3 Savannah Sparrows
7 Brewer's Sparrows
And over corse the tons of McCown's Longspurs and Lark Buntings.
So to camp we decided to head to Jackson Lake a new location for us.
We saw:
1 Forester's Tern
60-80 Brown-headed Cowbirds
1 Great Egret
14 Clay-colored Sparrows
1 Blue-gray Gnatcatcher
1 Wild Turkey
2 Ring-necked Pheasants
15+ House Wrens
4 Great-horned Owls
1 American Bittern
1 Bullock's Oriole
17 Western Grebes
1 Eastern Phoebe
Most of these birds except the Eastern Phoebe (which was on the bridge
on the way in) were found in Pelican Campground (or also heard from
Pelican Campground).
Good birding
