As an avid windsurfer, I take pleasure in spotting birds while on the
lake. On Saturday, June 18th, I saw what looked like some sort of
Jaeger out in the middle of Aurora Reservoir. It was very dark and
gull-sized. It's wings were very dark or black on the back with
pointy wing tips. It landed in the water briefly with 6 to 8 Ring-
billed Gulls. It was the last to join the floating flock and the
first to leave when I approached. As it flew off, it had an unusual
(for gulls) flight pattern with a mixture of gull and ternish wing
beats. It would not justify a trip to Aurora Reservoir to try and get
a look because the entry fee is $10 per car per day. However, if
you're a birder who already owns an annual pass and you're equipped
with a spotting scope, you may want to take a look.
