Sandy Arnesen and I did some atlasing in the Lamar area this past week. We saw Red-headed Woodpeckers in several of our blocks and confirmed breeding in 3 of our blocks. But we did not see or hear any other woodpeckers in our blocks.
We had found an injured raptor so not knowing what to do in the area, I called Duane Nelson and he told us what to do (call DOW). I asked Duane what he thought about the Red-headed Woodpeckers. His thought is that they have been displaced from the East because of the weather, floods, etc so have arrived in Colorado. We saw another Red-headed on our way home this morning.
