Yesterday while conducting surveys for Yellow-billed Cuckoos, Jacob Cooper and I found one territorial Least Flycatcher near Collbran in Mesa County. We got a visual of another that we believe was a second at the same location. We also heard several Fox Sparrows at other locations which is interesting because the elevation was between 5600-6000 feet at the survey points (lower than expected for this species). At least one Swainson's Thrush was also heard during surveys. The habitat is the area is very unique for anywhere I have been in Colorado. Box Elder was the dominant overstory tree species and the understory was very dense (skunkbush and chokecherry were most common bushes). We found no cuckoos.
Also, when I was leaving home for surveys yesterday I heard a calling Northern Pygmy-Owl (at 3:30 am). It has been calling fairly often since then from a neighbors yard. My wife and I heard it throughout the night last night and this morning. Interesting this bird is showing up and acting territorial this time of the year I think. Good summer birding!
