Field Trip Report from Genesee Mountain Park, Jefferson, US-CO Jul 7, 2011 8:30

Total 29 Species and 147 Individuals. Cavity nesters feeding young or fledged 
include:
Violet-Green Swallow, Western Bluebird, and House Wren.
Williamson's Sapsucker, Red Crossbill, and Hermit Thrush heard singing.
13 baby Bison romping and sleeping with adults.

Comments: Denver Field Ornithologists sponsored bird trip. Jefferson County, CO 
Genesee Park.
Drove car 6 miles and walked 0.5 miles with stops: from 7700 feet elevation at 
Exit 254 I-70 
and up to Genesee Flagpole at 8284 feet. Sunny, hazy, and becoming cloudy with 
temps 60-72 degrees F.

3 Turkey Vulture 3 Adults seen all Summer long this year as opposed to only 
April/May migration.
1 Red-tailed Hawk being chased by three Am Crows; two RTHA seen in area all 
Summer
1 Mourning Dove
6 Broad-tailed Hummingbird
3 Williamson's Sapsucker 3 Observed at Douglas-fir at flagpole, and at picnic 
area across from group reservation tables. No young or feeding observed.
3 Hairy Woodpecker
2 Northern Flicker Red-shafted
2 Western Wood-Pewee
6 Cordilleran Flycatcher
4 Black-billed Magpie
8 American Crow
25 Violet-green Swallow Three cavity nests in Ponderosa Pine and Douglas-fir. 
Feeding young. One or more fledglings observed.
1 Black-capped Chickadee
4 Mountain Chickadee Numbers of all Chickadees has been "low" this Summer on 
Genesee Mountain (personal comm Kathanne Lynch)
1 White-breasted Nuthatch
15 Pygmy Nuthatch
7 House Wren Active nest 50 feet south of flagpole. One fledged obs. Adults 
obs. carrying nesting material into cavity; possible second brood starting.
9 Western Bluebird In cavities, feeding young, carrying fecal sac, young 
outside nest. At flagpole and at picnic area across from group reservation.
2 Hermit Thrush
2 American Robin
8 Chipping Sparrow Presumed all adults trilling/chipping away in Ponderosa Pine.
3 Dark-eyed Junco Gray-headed adults. Possible nest not found.
2 Western Tanager
2 Black-headed Grosbeak at reporter's feeders in post-trip. Pair fed on 
sunflower seeds. 7500' Ponderosa.
3 Brown-headed Cowbird
13 House Finch
2 Red Crossbill Flight call and seen by two observers.
3 Pine Siskin
5 Lesser Goldfinch at reporter's nyger-thistle feeders in post-trip. 7500' 
Ponderosa. One green-backed male, 3 blacked-back males, and one female.
