This afternoon (7/21) while driving home from work on Highway 402, about 1 mile
east of Highway 287, I saw a kingbird shaped and sized bird flying south across
the road in front of me. I quickly picked up the gray coloring and a tail a
little longer than the body. With this I realized it was a Scissor-tailed
Flycatcher, probably female. It didn't have a black cap on it, so I was able to
eliminate Fork-tailed Flycatcher in this quick view. Luckily, this species is
easy to identify from its long tail and a kingbird shape. It looked identical
to the Scissor-tailed Flycatcher that Joe Roller found in Yuma County on July
12. I watched as long as I could while driving and it kept flying during that
time, which the bird was about 200 yards to the south and it was still going
strong towards the south. I really don't believe this bird to be chasable, but
there is still a chance it could still be around. I will keep my eyes open on
my way to and from work the next
few days and post if I can refind it.
