Cobirders,

The 2010 ABA List Report recently arrived in the mail. Based on ABA's
report, Colorado ranks a very respectable 9th for total number of documented
species. I note that it is respectable because of the fact that the states
listed ahead of Colorado are located next to the ocean, Mexico, in the
proximity of potential Asian/European strays or a combination of these. In
my humble opinion, Colorado's total is a reflection of the number of birders
that actively bird the state from corner to corner throughout the year.

As you can see below, Massachusetts is directly behind Colorado. Their
totals are impressive as well given the amount of land mass that they have
to bird, although the contribution of ocean species and species from "across
the pond" certainly bolster their totals. Our western neighbors in Nevada
have also done quite well. Especially considering that if you remove the
population of Las Vegas there is probably only a couple people in the state,
and they must certainly be birders! Here is the ranking according to the
ABA:

 1 643 California
 2 633 Texas
 3 546 Arizona
 4 533 New Mexico
 5 521 Oregon
 6 510 Alaska
 7 507 Florida
 8 500 Washington
 9 493 Colorado
10 491 Massachusetts
11 487 Nevada
12 473 Kansas

Good Birding,
