Highlight species include: (* denotes that there is new information on this species in this report) YELLOW-CROWNED NIGHT-HERON (Weld) MAGNIFICENT HUMMINGBIRD (Larimer) RUBY-THROATED HUMMINGBIRD (Huerfano) American Three-toed Woodpecker (Boulder) Black Phoebe (*Delta) Eastern Phoebe (Douglas, Park) SCISSOR-TAILED FLYCATCHER (Larimer) Bell's Vireo (Yuma) Winter Wren (*Boulder) Boulder County: --American Three-toed Woodpeckers were reported by Frye near Gold Hill on July 19. They were 2.5 miles above the intersection of Four Mile Canyon Road and Gold Run in a muddy flat area on the right side of the road. --A Winter Wren was reported by Boswell in Wild Basin on July 25. It was singing 100m below the second bridge on trail to Calypso Cascade. Wild Basin is part of Rocky Mountain NP and so a fee area and can be accessed from Hwy 7 above Allenspark. Delta County: --A Black Phoebe was reported by Cooper at the entrance to the old Hotchkiss Sewage Lagoon on July 26. Douglas County: --2 Eastern Phoebes were reported by Andrews at the bridge over Plum Creek at Chatfield SP on July 19. Huerfano County: --A RUBY-THROATED HUMMINGBIRD was reported by Nelder at their feeders in La Veta on July 22. Contact her at [email protected] for further information. Larimer County: --A SCISSOR-TAILED FLYCATCHER was reported by Wild on Hwy 402 about 1 mile east of Hwy 287 on July 21. --A female MAGNIFICIENT HUMMINGBIRD was reported by Kogler at Tunnel Campground on July 22. Tunnel Campground is 5 mile north of Hwy14 on Laramie River Road. Park County: --An Eastern Phoebe was reported by Drummond on Platte Ranch off of US 9 about halfway between Hartsel and Fairplay on July 19. Platte Ranch is private. To see the bird request permission to look around the ranch with Aimee the ranch owner/manager. Weld County: --A YELLOW-CROWNED NIGHT-HERON was reported by Elens at Glenmere Park in Greeley on June 5 and was seen again by Lefko on June 7. On June 7, Komar reported that the YELLOW-CROWNED NIGHT-HERON appears to be attempting to nest with a Black-crowned Night-Heron. On June 28 Lefko reported the YELLOW-CROWNED NIGHT-HERON feeding 2 young. On July 23, Edwards reported that the YELLOW-CROWNED NIGHT-HERON stood nearby the nest and sat on the nest but no evidence of young. Yuma County: --Bell's Vireo was reported by Edwards at Bonny Reservoir on July 25. The DFO field trip for Saturday, July 30 will be to Mount Evans led by Bob Shade (303-975-2476 or mobile: 720-256-4376). Meet at 0800 at Filius Park. Go west on I-70 to Evergreen exit (252), proceed on State 74 East 2 miles to Bergen Park. When you reach the turn-off for Bergen Park (King Soopers on that corner), turn the opposite way (right) and park in the FIlius Park lot no more than 100 yards on your right. From there we will consolidate cars to drive up to Eacho Lake and Summit Lake. You will need $10 per car or National Parks pass for the Mt Evans highway past Echo Lake Lodge. Bring lunch and clothing for 45 - 50 degree weather at Summit Lake as well as rain gear. A good chance to see high mountain birds such as Pine Grosbeak, Wilson's Warbler, Lincoln's Sparrow and mammals such as Mountain Goat. A chance for Brown-capped Rosy-Finch at Summit Lake.
