Greetings All,
I started today at Prewitt Res, then went to Jackson Res, and finished my day off at a couple shorebird spots in w. Weld. Highlights were Neotropic Cormorant: 2 immatures were in pond by Prewitt Reservoir. If one takes "first" entrance into the reservoir (coming from west) and then heads towards Logan County... you will come to a small cattail lined pond on your left. Park just past the pond, and follow the little stream that heads away from the reservoir. You will come to two additional ponds, a smaller one on the left and a bit bigger one on the right. The pond on the right is where the Neotrop Corm was a month ago, and the two were (and photographed) today. Kind of like the BL Kittiwakes, they seem to be undergoing parthenogenesis. One has to step over a low barbed-wire fence to get to these ponds, so they may be private property, and one may want to be cautious. Herring Gull: 1st summer bird at north side of Jackson Res. SB Dowitcher: Weld Co Rd 59 pond. Adult in alternate. Agitated, flying around much and, nicely, calling. Hairy Woodpecker: 2-3 at Prewitt. I gather they are uncommon rather than rare there, but... GW Teal: 2 with young at Lower Latham ponds. From what I gather, this is a rare breeder in CO, yes? High Tallies from Prewitt: 245 Chipping Sparrows, 125 Lark Sparrows, 330 Lark Buntings, 34 Bullock's Orioles. Of Interest?: 6 Cattle Egrets at Prewitt. Unusual in early Aug?
