This morning we were finally able to get back to Lathrop State Park to
search again for the Least Bittern. We found Yellow-breasted Chat,
MacGillivray's, Yellow and Orange-crowned Warblers, Spotted Towhees,
Chipping Sparrows and 2 Green Herons! We watched one catch and eat a
dragonfly. It was quite an exciting morning....even though we were unable to
re-locate the Least Bittern. Seeing the Green Herons has caused me to
speculate on whether they are a breeding pair... To be able to compare them
with the Least I saw earlier in the week...further cements my assessment.
The bird I saw was streaked with light brown (almost golden) and much
further down the belly...it had a very yellow beak and eye and lacked white
in front of the eye that the Green Heron has...it was overall much lighter
in color and slighter in build...and had yellow legs.

Great birding morning is Southern Colorado!
