What a surprise--I spotted a very shy female Common Merganser in the
Arkansas River near Canon City this evening as this is pretty early for fall
migrants of this species to be down here (previous reports for fall are in
Sept and pre-breeding in June). Maybe she was a non-breeder. Not long
after I saw her I spotted a Peregrine Falcon heading up river. After it
passed me I could see that it made a dive after something but wasn't able to
refind it. BTW, that was at 8:15 pm. Later after dark I enjoyed watching 4
Common Nighthawks foraging on insects attracted to the lights in a small
shopping center in Canon City.

This morning I was pleased when the Lewis's Woodpecker family returned to
the nest site area as they perched in a snag almost directly above my car.
So I got some nice photos, one from an interesting angle and one of a hatch
year bird that I have uploaded to my
BirdsAndNature<http://BirdsAndNature.blogspot.com>blog. There has
also been a big push of landbirds migrating along the
Arkansas River the past several days but it is late so will post on that
tomorrow.
