Hello,

This weekend was spent birding the Black Canyon of the Gunnison National
Park, along with a stop in Gunnison itself. I had 2 main bird targets,
Gunnison Sage Grouse and Dusky Grouse, and am happy to report I was
successful in my search. First off, thanks to Jason Beason, Joe Roller, and
WR Shade for answering my RFI. Your advice on places to try for Dusky
Grouse was most appreciated. I actually got lucky on my first try (East
Portal road), and didn't intentionally target this species afterwards,
although I still managed another pair on my last evening in the park.

Here were the highlights of the weekend:

DUSKY GROUSE: 3 along East Portal Road on 6:00 pm on August 12th, and 2 on
the Warner Point trail at 7:00 pm on the 13th

TOWNSEND'S WARBLER: 2 on the oak flats trail, on the 13th. Earlier than
expected migrants?

Overall, The Oak Flat trails had the greatest diversity, while the South Rim
trail was pretty dead.

On the morning of the 14th I hit up S US 38 looking for Gunnison Sage
Grouse. I was fairly sucessful, locating two different groups. I had brief
glimpses of 3? birds on the edge of the road about 2 miles after the start
of the gravel. On my drive back, I had much better and prolonged views in
the driveway! of a house about a block or less from the end of the pavement.

Good Birding!
