Fremont, *Huerfano, Mesa) YELLOW-CROWNED NIGHT-HERON (Boulder) Short-billed Dowitcher (Weld) Caspian Tern (Boulder) American Three-toed Woodpecker (Eagle, Mesa) Black Phoebe (Fremont) Blue-winged Warbler (*Huerfano) Tennessee Warbler (*Huerfano) Summer Tanager (Larimer) SCARLET TANAGER (*El Paso) Indigo Bunting (Fremont) Boulder County: --A Green Heron was reported by Hutchinson at Cottonwood Marsh on August 8. --2 Green Herons were reported by Mlodinow at Sawhill Ponds on August 11. --A juv YELLOW-CROWNED NIGHT-HERON and Caspian Tern were reported by Deininger at McIntosh Lake in Longmont on August 10. Eagle County: --An American Three-toed Woodpecker was reported by Dee on the Mt Thomas Trail south of Eagle off Crooked Creek Pass on August 10. El Paso County: --An "orange-variant" SCARLET TANAGER was reported by Walker at Starsmore Discovery Center in Colorado Springs on August 8. On August 9 Maynard reported that several birders watched the SCARLET TANAGER feed young. Ceci Lee reported seeing the SCARLET TANAGER on August 10. Bill Maynard reported tha the SCARLET TANAGER was seen on August 11. Directions from Bill Maynard: At the mouth of North Cheyenne Canyon, turn and go up the canyon keeping (Starsmore) on your left as you drive upstream. After about .5 mile you will see a big green water storage tank on the hill above you on the right. In just a few hundred feet there will be a free parking area on the right. Park and walk on the road upstream until you come to a path that will take you to a footbridge on the left that has a short stone walls. The tanager was seen on both sides of the road and on both sides of the small stream almost always very low in bushes in the area of the bridge. If you see tall Mountain Ashes in the streambed with lots of orange-colored fruits you need to look mostly upstream from there. There is lots of traffic on the narrow road --A Green Heron was reported by Ceci Lee at Rice Pond in Fountain Creek RP on August 13. Fremont County: --A LEAST BITTERN was reported by Rich Miller on August 3 & 4 at the cattail marsh at Holcim Wetlands. Miller also reported a Black Phoebe on August 4. On August 5, Bill Maynard reported the Least Bittern, 2 Green Herons, and a male Indigo Bunting at Holcim Wetlands, On August 6, Patrick reported Least Bittern and Black Phoebe at Holcim Wetlands. On August 6, Moss reported Least Bittern and 2 Green Herons at Holcim Wetlands. On August 7, Roller reported that the Least Bittern continued at Holcim Wetlands. On August 9, Rich Miller flushed the LEAST BITTERN at Holcim. On August 14, Moss reported that the LEAST BITTERN was on the NE side of the wetlands on the Beaver Lodge. Huerfano County: --2 Green Herons were reported by Nelder at Lathrop SP on August 7. On August 14, Nelder reported one Green Heron at Lathrop SP. --A Blue-winged Warbler and Tennessee Warbler were reported by Nelder on Valley Road on August 14. Larimer County: --A Summer Tanager was reported by Coley on the Big Thompson Rec Trail in Loveland, East of Wilson Ave on August 9. --An ad NEOTROPIC CORMORANT was reported by Floyd at Timnath Reservoir on August 14. It was on the NE arm with access from Majestic View Drive. Mesa County: --A Green Heron was reported by Arnold at Connected Lakes SP on August 6. --3 American Three-toed Woodpeckers were reported by Korte on the Crag Crest Loop on Grand Mesa on August 10. Washington County: --2 imm NEOTROPIC CORMORANTS were reported by Mlodinow on a pond by Prewitt on August 6. Weld County: --A Short-billed Dowitcher was reported by Mlodinow on a pond on CR 59 on August 6. The DFO Field Trip for Saturday, August 20 will be to Cherry Creek State Park led by Chris Blakeslee (303-694-4670, and Mary Cay Burger (303-771-3431). Meet the leaders at 0700 in the Marina parking lot near the park's west entrance. Will be on paved or hard gravel trails in various location around the reservoir so this is a wheelcahir accessible trip. Bring snacks, sunscreen, and water for easy half-day trip. From Yosemite drive east on Union Ave. Just past Cherry Creek High School is the west park entrance. State Parks pass required. The DFO Field Trip for Sunday, August 21 will be to Roxborough State Park led by Doris Cruze (303-798-8022) Meet the leader ay 0730 at Roxborough Visitor Center. To reach the park, take S. Wadsworth, past Chatfield SP to Waterton Rd on left, Take Waterton Rd 1.6 miles east to North Rampart Range Rd, turn right and go south 2.3 miles to Roxborough Park Rd. Turn left and follow signs to the park (2.2 miles). Trip will end around 11:30 so lunch is optional but bring plenty of water. There is a nice place to enjoy lunch at the Visitor Center.
