We have added two "firsts" to our 4-year-old yard list in the past two
days.  Last evening at dusk, we heard and briefly saw in the gloom a Northern
Pygmy Owl.  In fact, we might have sighted a second one.  While we live in its
normal habitat, we have never heard one before and assume that this was a bird
(or a pair) on the move.  A much greater surprise came at 7:00 this morning
when a beautiful light morph Ferruginous Hawk flew north over our house, its
rufous upperwing coverts and white tail gleaming in the early sunlight.  What
was a prairie species doing up here at 8000 feet in the Ponderosa/Douglas
habitat 35 miles northwest of Fort Collins?  Only fall dispersal comes to mind.
