Birders,

The sub adult dark-morph Reddish Egret I first reported at Adobe Creek Reservoir (Bent and Kiowa Counties) on August 2nd was still present on August 20th. How a showy bird that is partial to open sand bars (especially unvegetated points) can be hard to find at times is a mystery to me.

Today, it was actively hunting for prey using the classic canopy feeding strategy this species is famous for. It was amongst gulls and pelicans on the north tip of Tern Island, the large island west of the channel separating the north and south parts of the lake. Best viewing is from the channel, approached either from Bent County Road 10, or the east-west Road that is a little south of County Line Road near the boat ramps. A part of County Road 10 just north of Bent County Road VV is impassable due to standing water in the road. This sticky spot can be bypassed by taking VV east, then north, and doubling back to the north part of the reservoir.
