Hello, Birders. The pre-dawn flight over Lafayette, eastern Boulder County, was light to moderate this morning, Thursday, August 25th, with birds going over at a rate of about 30 flight calls per hour. It was an interesting mix: half were presumed Vesper Sparrows; the rest were a trickle of Brewer's Sparrows and Wilson's Warblers, plus a nice Lark Bunting.
A coupla hours after sunrise, Andrew and I visited the Coalton Open Space (access from McCaslin Boulevard, Superior). Wow. What a marvelous place. Kansas meets Boulder. Thanks to Bill Kaempfer and Christian Nunes for exhorting me to check this place out. Anyhow, we found: * a Sage Thrasher, the very first bird we saw; and we saw another later. Curiously, those were my first Boulder County Sage Thrashers in more than 5 years. * at least 25 widely scattered Lark Buntings. The birds were mainly in 1s and 2s. * at least 40 widely scattered Brewer's Sparrows, but only 1 Chipping Sparrow. Also 1 Clay-colored Sparrow. * a magnificent Golden Eagle; kinda wondered if it was gonna scoop up Andrew, who specializes in getting too far ahead of me. * a distant, soaring Peregrine Falcon. * at least 15 Say's Phoebes. Seemed like a lot; a bit of a movement going on? * best of all, an Upland Sandpiper, calling, and even down on the ground, at least for a little while. Here's something to ponder. That Upland Sandpiper was my 8th detection of the species in Boulder County in the past 25 months, but the two Sage Thrashers were my first detection of the species in Boulder County in more than 60 months. Go figure. ------------------------------- Ted Floyd Editor, Birding Please check out the website of the ABA: http://tinyurl.com/6kmbfvx And please check out The ABA Blog: http://tinyurl.com/4n6qswt We're on twitter, too: http://tinyurl.com/2ejzlzv ------------------------------- -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Colorado Birds" group.
