COBirders,

Sorry for the tardy post, I did not last long after getting home last night.
Yesterday, Brad Steger, Lisa Edwards and I did some birding in Custer, Fremont
and Bent/Kiowa counties.  Custer was surprisingly slow, Lake DeWeese has some
decent shore but very few shorebirds.  ~20 BAIRD'S, ~10 LEAST and a single
STILT SANDPIPER along with KILLDEER were working the southwest end of the
reservoir.  Below the dam there were lots of birds but nothing of note that we
could find.  A quick run through Fremont on our way out to look for the Reddish
Egret produced a few things.  Along highway 119 in Florence we saw the same
things SeEtta reported but we also had a single CATTLE EGRET in with some
cattle.  We stopped to give the Least Bittern a try and other than Brad and
Lisa hearing something that might have been it, we were unable to relocate any
of the birds.  Next we headed for Blue Lake in Bent/Kiowa counties.

As we were scanning around Blue Lake, we had a group of sandpipers come in over
the top of us that looked and sounded suspiciously like BUFF-BREASTED
SANDPIPERs.  A total of eight Buffies eventually landed about 50 yards from us
and gave us great looks for over an hour.  Although I basically had no cell
signal, I was lucky enough to get one that lasted just long enough to call
Duane Nelson who came out to join us and enjoy the sandpipers.  We also had an
adult and juvenile LEAST TERN.  Duane mentioned that it is getting very late
for them.  The other nice thing there was the group of at least 103 LONG-BILLED
CURLEWs.  We were unable to relocate the Egret but with the activity on and
around the lake we were not all that surprised.  The bird could easily still be
there.  Then as we left and were heading somewhat back towards home we heard
about the Canada Warbler at Last Chance so we detoured in hopes of making it
before dark.  We arrived with
just enough "good" light to check out the area and we were rewarded with the
CANADA WARBLER.  I don't think we had anything different than what was reported
by Steve.  So even though our day started out fairly slow, I think we ended up
with ~133 species and a number of real nice birds.
