Hello everyone,

I found 2 SPRAGUE'S PIPITS in Boulder County today. Both were in very separate
places. Both were in inaccessible areas to birders. They were found inside
current Burrowing Owl Closures. Both areas currently have Burrowing Owls
present, so birders are S.O.L. if they want to go look for Pipits where I found
them. This includes the area where a Sprague's was found last year. DO NOT
TRESPASS IN OWL CLOSURES. I will have your hide if you do. We were lucky last
year that the owls did not breed at that site, but even luckier now that they
are back and have fledged 5 young there this year.

It may be possible to detect one along the Coalton Trail. I had one flying
around that would have been easily detectible from the trail. Walking the
Coalton Trail or High Plains Trail in the early AM would be the best bet. The
trick to finding them includes:

1) Being familiar with the flight call, a very pipit-like "squeet-squeet".
2) The presence of high-quality native grasslands.
3) The presence of a hill or ridge.

There are some hills out there that are accessible to birders, with the proper
documents. If you want to go explore in the Southern Grasslands Habitat
Conservation Area (HCA), but outside the inaccessible BUOW closures, then one
needs an Off-Trail HCA Permit. These are obtainable from the OSMP web site.
Fill this out, print it, and bring it with you:

Familiarize yourself with the BUOW closures and be sure not to trespass:

I prefer to take the stance that sharing information like this is a good thing.
If a single person violates these closures, I will refrain from sharing
important information like this in the future. Ethics come before ticks.

Thanks,
