Greetings All,
I decided to head east from Longmont rather than west this afternoon, and went to Union Reservoir. Highlights were one female SURF SCOTER and one RED-NECKED GREBE (probably juv). Both (in the afternoon) would be best observed from the Longmont city park on the sw. shore. If you follow the road along the lakeshore (once inside the park, which is a fee area) to the west, you will come to a small pier with a bench. This is an excellent observation point for the reservoir in the evening. At sunset, >9000 Common Grackles flew overhead over a 30 minute period Also on reservoir were nearly 1000 Western/Clark's Grebes (mostly Westerns), a Common Loon, and about 10 Canvasback. Just to the east of the n. side of the lake was a late-ish Swainson's Hawk. As an FYI, I birded Golden Ponds (in Longmont) this morning, and it was nearly migrant-less, as it has been all fall...
