I checked Veteran's Park again this morning but the Black-throated Green Warbler I reported on appears to have moved on (need to scroll down the page on my blog to see photos of it). I did find an urban American Dipper in the Arkansas River as it flows through the middle of Canon City. It was located near the Sell's Lake parking area for the Riverwalk but I have seen dippers in past years working the river just a hundred or so feet east of the 9th St bridge.
I also found an apparent Black Phoebe in that same area as it sang it's primary song quite vigorously. I did not see it close enough to rule out hybrid features but it did look and sound like a Black Phoebe. As it was only about a quarter mile from where I saw one yesterday it may well be the same bird. After it flew further away it continued singing it's primary song for a consecutive total of over 5 minutes. Though Black Phoebes often sing in the fall and winter I have not heard them continue singing for such a long bout at this time of year. I have uploaded photos of the dipper and phoebe onto my Birds and Nature<http://BirdsAndNature.blogspot.com>blog. I also posted a cool video by Cornell Lab of waterbirds and shorebirds foraging on a barrier island off Louisiana that has some great videography and fantastic close-ups.
