Late yesterday afternoon I found myself on the south side of Pueblo when I
got out of a meeting so I drove just south of town which can have some nice
raptors in winter. I was pleased to find 2 Northern Shrikes within a half
mile of each other--both, sadly, in what used to be grassland but was used
for larger acreage residential/horse/cattle use and now gone fallow with
nothing but invasive kochia. I only found two hawks, one for sure a
Red-tail and the other took off so didn't get an id. However when I got
back to 'the mesa' area of Pueblo I spotted a light Harlan's Hawk with a
lot of white on it's face and mostly white tail. Though I stopped my car a
good hundred feet away, as soon as I pointed my long lens in it's direction
the hawk took off and I could not refind it. I was surprised to find a
Red-headed Woodpecker on 40th Lane near S Rd, a species I haven't seen in
the Pueblo area for some years.
