Folks- I headed up to Hygiene today on a birdseed run. On my way there I
was very pleased to see the light Harlan's Hawk that has an affinity for
the power poles near 75th & Airport, back for a 5th winter. I first noted
the hawk 23 Nov.
2007<http://brdpics.blogspot.com/2007/11/light-harlans-hawk.html%29>and
many have seen it in the area every winter since. Many
of you know the bird's incredible story but in case you haven't I'll
mention that Jerry Liguori (author of *Hawks From Every Angle: How To
Identify Raptors in Flight* <http://www.buteobooks.com/product/11425.html>
<http://www.buteobooks.com/product/11425.html>and *Hawks at a Distance:
Identification of Migrant Raptors<http://www.buteobooks.com/product/13423.html>
)* photographed the same bird at Gunsight Mountain, Alaska in migration to
its breeding grounds in the spring of 2009. (For more on this
awesome-sounding hawkwatch site, check out this recent article (PDF
file<http://tinyurl.com/7vmrhox%20>)
from *Birding* *Magazine*.*

*Feather-by-feather analysis of flight photos from Colorado & Alaska
clearly established it was the same bird and we co-authored an article
documenting the long distance photo-recovery in *Colorado Birds* Vol. 44
No. 1, Jan. 2010 (PDF here <https://files.me.com/bill.schmoker/nyaojn>).

Good to see this old friend back again from Alaska!

Enjoy- Bill Schmoker, Longmont
