COBirders,

I went down to do the winter waterfowl count at Trinidad Lake, Lathrop and Lake
Maria.  I had limited time so did not get to land bird as much as I would have
liked to but that's how it goes.  Here are the highlights:

Trinidad Lake State Park:
Note:  Numbers of ducks and coots were way down from the last time Dan Maynard
and I were there.
0 Goldeneye of any flavor

1 fem/imm. Surf Scoter
1 imm. Long-tailed Duck (apparent first county record, I might have photos
(very poor quality if IDable at all?) but Cole Wild who was on his way home
from New Mexico said he was able to get photos of it.)
1 Red-necked Grebe (I thought I could see one way to the west but felt
uncomfortable calling it for sure with the shimmers and distance.  I asked Cole
to look for it and he was able to find the bird also and it sounded like it was
closer than I had had it 3 or so hours earlier.)

Thanks to Cole for taking time to stop and look for these birds.  The scoter
was seen from going in on the west end of the lake and Cole did not have time
to do that.

Lathrop State Park:
32 Common Goldeneye
1 Common Loon
5 species of gulls
7 Bonaparte's Gulls
2 Thayer's Gulls (1 adult, 1 1st cycle)

Lake Maria (this is a small private lake east of Walsenburg on Highway 10,
viewed from the highway):
Note:  It is as low as I have ever seen it and numbers were way down from
normal.
24 Snow Goose
12 Cackling Goose
32 Canvasback (I have had over 700 here in November in past years, when there
is more water)
1 Lesser Yellowlegs (this seems fairly late for this species?)

1 Eastern Bluebird
