Greetings All,
Today, Bill Schmoker and I (plus a few other folks) headed to NE Colorado. As posted by Rachel Hopper, there were 4 COMMON REDPOLLS (with 100 or so Am Tree Sparrows and 100 or so Am Goldfinches) and a SNOW BUNTING near the Sedgwick portion of Jumbo Reservoir (the bunting actually making a sortie over the reservoir). There were also two GLAUCOUS GULLS on Jumbo, an adult and a 1st/2nd year bird. Along the road a Red Lion SWA, in Logan County, we had a very late LARK BUNTING. A threesome Am White Pelicans were also lingering at Jumbo, and a Common Loon was out on the res. We then headed for the Lions Wayside Common Ground-Dove at Julesburg. We ran into the Linfields there, who had been unsuccessful. We joined them for about an hour, without luck (this was around 10am-11am). We did have a late-ish WILSON'S SNIPE, though. We popped down to Sand Draw SWA, encountering HUNDREDS of LAPLAND LONGSPURS along the way. At Sand Draw SWA, there was a COMMON REDPOLL within 100 feet of the parking area along the sw. edge. Also there were 3 WHITE-WINGED JUNCOS, 4 CASSIAR'S JUNCOS, 2 GRAY-HEADED JUNCOS, and 2 BB MAGPIES. Then, we got a call from Roger L. Dashing back to Julesburg (top speed will not be publicly acknowledged), we refound the COMMON GROUND-DOVE, which was both cooperative (as in perching in open) and flighty (as in easily flushed). THANKS TO THE LINFIELDS We then buzzed down to Haxtun, where at the city park, we found scads of birds but NO WOOD THRUSH NOR ANY N PARULA :o( However, we did have a ROCKY MTN DOWNY WOODPECKER, WESTERN MOUNTAIN WB NUTHATCH, 3 RB NUTHATCHES, 3 BROWN CREEPERS, 3 GC KINGLETS, and a WINTER WREN. FInally, at the Haxtun STP, in a nearby field, there were 3 GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GEESE. A pretty fun day. The day total for Am Tree Sparrows was in excess of 200. For Lapland Longspurs, the total was likely > 500. Good Birding Steven Mlodinow Longmont, CO -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Colorado Birds" group.
