Today started with a bird finding me. I have been over the Grand Mesa
twice before this trip and have never seen a STELLER’S JAY. Well, this
morning while loading the truck, one flew in to check out the only activity
going on this morning at Island Lake.

Next, drive down of the mesa to Jerry Creek Reservoirs to search for ducks.
A lone Belted Kingfisher was cruising the shore line and Mallards,
Gadwall, American Coot, Greater and Lesser Scaup, American Wigeon and new
for the trip BUFFLEHEAD and COMMON GOLDENEYE. Next stop was supposed to be
Vega SP, but an accident had traffic backed up so we did a U-turn and
started to head east. A golden Eagle soaring along the cliffs on CO65 was
a great sight.

Just west of mile marker 59 on I-70 in the median was a loon, I would say
COMMON LOON, but doing 80mph in traffic I was only able to get a brief look.

My last stop of the trip was to Rifle Gap SP to see if there was any
turnover. The PACIFIC LOON is still holding. It spent all its time with
two Western Grebes and swam close to the south shore providing great
looks. The only other waterfowl was a flock of 60 Common Goldeneye, one
Lesser Scaup and one Common Merganser.
