About mid-day today I had five different species of goose at Dodd Reservoir (west of CO 119 on Niwot Road; for best and safest viewing go to the parking lot at the NW corner).
Among the white-cheeked geese, my guess was that lesser Canada Goose was most common with a smaller number of Richardson's Cackling Goose present too. Among the larger sub-species of Canada Goose, most seemed to be concentrated at the eastern end of the reservoir. Mixed in among the lesser Canada Geese were three other species including one juvenile Greater White-fronted Goose, six or seven Snow Geese and two Ross's Goose. Interestingly, the Snow and Ross's were not close to associating with each other, much like it seemed to me when I drove past this spot on Wednesday. Also present was something I would posit as a Canada X Snow-white head, brown body and largish bill. The Dodd geese seem to rest on the reservoir mid-day, but early and late are likely to be feeding in the adjacent fields. Elsewhere in eastern Boulder County I was able to coax one Yellow-rumped Warbler to briefly leave the insect rich environment of the Boulder Wastewater Treatment Plant and fly over to Boulder Creek west of 75th St. Has someone put a Dipper decoy under the 75th St. bridge? The bird always appears almost motionless on the same rock. One lingering Eared Grebe was on Cottonwood Marsh at Walden Ponds. Valmont had several Hooded and Red-breasted Mergansers as well as Canvasback.
