Greetings All,
At about 1:30 I found a 1st-winter Little Gull in a flock of about 25 Bonaparte's Gulls at the s. end of Union Res, a short ways e. of the entrance to the Longmont City Park. At this spot, there are picnic benches on a narrow strip of land between the road and the actual lake. I watched the bird for about 15 minutes, placed a number of calls, and scrambled home for my camera. I arrived back, finding the bird quickly, then losing it moments before Rachel Hopper arrived. She found the bird briefly about 5 minutes later, but it was a goodly 30 minutes or so until the bird was feeding with a flock of Bonys, reasonably close, giving us prolonged views. Just as we went into the car to seek heat from the heater, Nick and Cole appeared. We pointed to the flock, easily visible, and after a few moments Nick (I believe it was Nick) said: There it is. Cole quickly added, "I got it." And then someone said about "Nice adult." I gawped, "Eh? Ever the eloquent. An adult. Isn't that what you had. No it wasn't. But it was what they had. And soon the first winter joined it. Both birds were still knocking about the south end, usually in close company of at least a handful of Bony's, when I left at 3:30pm A bit on the late side, there was also a Clark's Grebe on the reservoir.
