As I suspected, more and more Rosies are coming, as the snow piles
up. There was already about 2' of snow yesterday; today it is snowing
hard...and even more Rosies have shown up! Watching the flock wheel
and turn, I'm sure there are at least 600 in the air and surrounding
trees. The flocks are huge...like the blasted starlings in Pueblo.

I would break down the Rosy-Finch species that visit like this: 50%
Brown-capped, 40% Gray-crowned, including Hepburn's and about 10%
Black.

Saturday, December 24 is the 22nd annual Spanish Peaks Christmas
Count, led by our beloved friend Dave Silverman. I wish I could be
there, but will of course offer my yard to the birders. dave

PLEASE KEEP THE GATE CLOSED WHEN NOT ACTUALLY GOING THROUGH IT. There
is a dangerous dog on a chain in the front yard next door; it is NOT
behind a fence. One of my puppies has already been mauled when it
found the gate open, but thankfully is making a fine recovery. The
dog is a killer.

But on to more delightful news; I can feed the birds on Saturday
morning, so I'm guessing that with all this snow, there will be plenty
of all three Rosy Finches here. Especially in the morning. I may, or
may not, be able to join you while you're here. Come on down.

The Spanish Peaks CBC will be Saturday, 12-24-11. Meet 8 AM in La Veta
at the Municipal Park's covered pavilion on Ryus Ave just west of its
jct with Main St.(CSH#12). The park is across from the Bakery (up the
street from the Inn). The Bakery is a wonderful place to get coffee
and a pastry (or lunch later) Have fun...it's a good group.

In the last few days, I have seen a Chihuahuan Raven (not much bigger
than a crow), an American Kesteral, several Blue and Scrub Jays, many
Magpies, American and Lesser Goldfinches, Evening Grosbeaks, Mtn. and
Bk-capped Chickadees, Song Sparrow, Hairy and Down Woodpeckers,
Flickers, and several varieties of Junco, along with all the others
expected. With all the activity, one might see one of the small hawks
feeding; they do that a lot, here.
