Hello, Deb and I decided to head to Pueblo Res on fri, camp out, and get up early this morning to bird. Friday afternoon we had a N. Mockingbird and Curve-billed Thrasher in camp, along with a Shrike sp (I assumed Northern when I first saw it, a 3/4 view from behind, but as it turned to profile, it looked quite like a Loggerhead. I stepped out from behind a tree for a better view, and it immediately flew, and wasn't seen again). Also many EC Doves, and a flock of Bushtits visited our campsite. On the lake were Coots, PB Grebes, RB Gulls, Gadwall, and one non-breeding plastic mallard decoy (male). The evening was calm and windless, and we went to sleep to the hooting of Great Horned Owls, which went on periodically throughout the night.
This morning began calm and windless, and we were awakened by the raucous cooing of EC Doves, and the gunfire of duck hunters. Hope they missed. About 7:30, the onset of of a brutal wind that still has not stopped blowing came out of nowhere and completely rocked our tent. An extra guy line and stake kept it up, but the birds stayed down. The entire lake was rolling toward the dam, covered in whitecaps. So, birding today was pretty much a bust. We did have good close looks at a nice flock of Horned Lark (about 50) near the campground, a Harrier in the Wildlife area, a small group of Goldeneye near the Sailboard area, and very few gulls at the South Marina. Better luck next time. Dave Cameron Denver -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Colorado Birds" group. To post to this group, send email to [email protected].
