On Monday, January 2, 2012, twenty-six participants spread out for the Barr
Lake Christmas Bird Count. With clear skies and mild weather, counters
tallied 67 species, somewhat low for the count in recent years. The 67th
species, however, made up for the low species count. With early data
indicating that the Horned Lark count would be extremely low, Pete Plage
headed back to his count area in the afternoon to track down these normally
numerous grassland birds as well as any other missed species. While
scanning a snow covered field for the larks, he spotted the Snowy Owl that
has since been seen by a growing number of Colorado birders. Other
highlights of the count were 3 Greater Scaup, a Red-necked Grebe, Barn Owl,
Wild Turkeys, 2 Virginia Rails, Marsh Wren, and Common and Great-tailed
Grackles. Thanks to the RMBO staff for setting out coffee, tea and cocoa to
take off the early morning chill and to Bill Kaempfer for facilitating a
smooth transition of compilers. Thanks also to those who turned out for the
count.
