This morning there was a drake Barrow's Goldeneye on the Platte River just south of 88th in Thornton. To see the bird, park in the open space parking lot at Colorado & 88th, and walk south on the paved bike path a few hundred yards to the large wooden observation platform. The bird was diving in the area south of the ripples about 100 yards south of the observation platform. The closest exit off I25 is 84th.
I watched it for several minutes, and it seemed to be swimming along with a female, although the female's bill was only just tipped with yellow, not the full yellow the guides suggest that the female Barrow's usually has.
