Sorry for the late post-but you didn't miss much! I got out for a bit of birding on both Saturday and Sunday in the Boulder area over this past weekend. While I added a few species to my year list-there wasn't a lot of stuff of interest to other die-hard lister/chasers!
Saturday I did happen on a flock of what I estimated to be 600 Great-tailed Grackles in Louisville (at the cemetery on the corner of CR 104 and CO 42) which outnumbered my previous large flock for this species in Boulder county by, well 600-fold! I also picked out a Wood Duck at Valmont Reservoir where a swan persists (I am moving gradually toward Trumpeter away from Tundra on this bird that is ¾ mile from the Valmont Overlook, but stay tuned for Gullapalozza on Feb. 4 to know for sure, once and for all, hopefully.) Sunday I tracked down a nice flock including several Bushtits and a single Lesser Goldfinch at Hawthorn and 4th in North Boulder. The finch was of such a bright yellow tone that it knocked my socks off, figuratively speaking. Later that afternoon I picked out a California (adult) and a Glaucous (1st cycle) Gull at McIntosh Lake in Longmont. Other than McIntosh, however, there were few gulls (and fewer ducks) to be found-almost none in Broomfield County and fewer, if you can believe that, at 3:30-4:30 p.m. on either day at Valmont!
