Hi all:
I noted that the list of birds sighted included a Swainson's Hawk that was not
mentioned in the summary. Considering that it would be nearly a month early, I
suspect that the entry is in the wrong line -- perhaps it should have been a
Ferruginous?
Sincerely,
Tony Leukering

Visitors:
Jim Banks visited, 09:10 to approx. noon. David Clark visited 10:20 to
11:20, plans more visits.
Distinguished visitor, Buzz Morrison, visited 11:25 to 13:10. Buzz manned
the Hawkwatch for many years, especially during the years of involvement by
Denver Museum of Natural History. It was Buzz who saw the Cooper's Hawk.
Lise Neer visited shortly and will visit during lunch.
A couple, just moved to CO from Iowa, were interested in birds and will
probably begin using CoBirds.
Weather:
Morning wind was calm from E, beginning 14:30 W. wind increased to average
30 mph with gusts to 50 mph. Shift to west wind occurred at about noon.
Sky was nearly clear all day. Temperature ranged 13.5 deg. C to 18.0 deg.
C. Humidity 11% to 8%
Raptor Observations:
Local Red-tailed Hawks appeared frequently all day, at one time performing
courtship dives and rapid flights to heights. The pair flew close to
eachother at times. A local Prairie Falcon pair performed similarly for us.
Maybe they'll nest at Red Rocks. A male Kestrel mobbed one of the local
Red-tailed Hawks a few times. At 15:00 the locals interacted with a 3rd
local redtail near the south end of the ridge.
Our local RTHa, PrFa and GoEa did not exhibit the moulted feathers noted
by previous counters/observers. We had good views of each.
Northern Goshawk, adult, passed near the ridge at eye level, <100 yd.
distant. Soared rapidly in strong wind without flapping toward BCLP. All
gray and white marking on underwings (not brown), light colored - broad
breast & belly (not streaked), barred tail slightly pointed when closed.
Never saw upper-wing. One person noted dark cap. Did not observe white
eyeline. 3 persons agreed all other observations of NoGo.
