Cobirders:

As DFO Historian, I published several stories concerning the histories of
DFO and CFO in 2002 and 2003 based on a thorough search of the literature
and the DFO complete Historic records I had at my home 455 Dover. I also
interviewed Lynn Wilcocksen, Patty Echelmeyer, Hugh Kimgery, Bob Spencer,
and other old time DFO members.

My publications are:

Finch, W. I., 2002, Subject index to the Journal of the Colorado Field
Ornithologist 1967-2000: '"Volume 36 Supplement", 62 p. [see p 1-2 & 22,
not published as part of a regular volume, sold separately] .

Finch, W. I., 2002, The Colorado Bird Club -- Beginnings and early
history:The Lark Bunting, v. 37, no. 3, p. 1 & 6.

Finch, W. I., The Denver Field Ornithologists - Watching birds since 1935:
Colorado Birds, v. 37, no. 4, p. 180-186.

The motivation for the separation of DFO from the proposed new CFO, and
whose formal Journal publication was started in 1967 {see the subject
index report, p.1-2] and done by Colorado Bird Club members was a major issue
that is discussed in these stories. Detailed minutes of the Museum meeting
in 1972 was used to write this; to my knowledge there are no meeting
minutes for 1965-1971. The clear separation of bird watching [DFO] and
environmental [Audubon] focuses has proved to be a success.

All of the DFO historic records were transferred to DMNS several years
ago;. I have a few Kris Haghund and her assistant did not want that I will
search again. They were supposed to put them in their electronic data bank,
they may not be all be done yet.

There is a definite need for a story on the "History of CFO" with
reference to the three Finch stories. I was asked to write one, reCFO but I
did
not find time to schedule it. CFO does not have a named historian office
position. [it is badly needed, it would be big job.] and probably there is
no single complete set of CFO historic data..The Index I published in 2002
needs to be searched under the Subject: "Historic Colorado bird records",
this is a starting place.

Peaceful birding,

Sincerely,

Warren I. Finch
