Greetings All,
Yesterday's collection of gulls at Prewitt Reservoir (aka, The Great Dead Fish Fest), some seen alone, some with Glenn Walbek + Joe Roller, included the following: * indicates present one week ago 100+ Herring Gulls* 10 Thayer's Gulls (some same, some different as last week as age-class mix different) 2 Lesser Black-backed Gulls (2nd year birds)* 6 Glaucous Gulls (adult, 3rd year*, 2nd year*, 3 first years*) 1 Glaucous-winged Gull (1st year) -- I didn't see this bird last week, but Glenn did. Tim Smart and I had a 2nd cycle bird last weekend. 1 Glaucous-winged x Herring Gull (1st year)* 1 Iceland Gulls (1st year) -- last week, Tim and I had a 2nd cycle and an adult; Glenn had a first year bird within the last week or two, which may have been this bird. 1 Western Gull: 3rd year? 2nd year transitioning into 3rd year? -- picture an adult Western Gull with solid black folded primaries, some brown on tertials and a bill both yellow and black. -- and hundreds of RB Gulls. The pond along Route 6, just w. of Prewitt, at intersection with Co Rd R, had a huge number of birds at dawn including: 2 pairs of GH Owls vocally challenging each other, one bird could be seen on nest. 1 calling LE Owl 100+ G White-fronted Geese (over 500 there later in day) 1800 Ross's Geese (INCLUDING ONE BLUE-MORPH!!!!!!!!) 1000 Cackling Geese 100 or so gulls, including 2 Thayer's Gulls. At the northeast end of Jackson Reservoir, there was a Gadwall x Mallard hybrid (yes, another!), 2 White-winged Juncos, and my first Greater Yellowlegs of the spring. The place was virtually a gull-free zone. Various spots east and south of Greeley had good numbers of birds but nada worthy of mention.
