Today and on 5/4, I have had 1, male Rose-breasted Grosbeak in my yd. Also
today and yesterday I have 1,m. and 1, f. Black-chinned Hummingbird and 1, m.
and 1, f. Broad-tailed Hummingbird in the yard. There have been a fair amount
of Chipping Sparrows and Yellow-rumped Warblers in the yard for at least 6
days. Courtship continues with Black-capped Chickadees nesting in a box, after
they got the box after the Mountain Chickadees kept checking it out.Mountain
Chickadees nested last year in my neighbors yard, but they came to my yard alot
while feeding their young. Hope they will bring their young to my yd. this
summer. My earliest arrival date for hummers is 5/9, with the exception of the
1, Broad-tailed who was near my blooming Redbud tree, about 2 weeks ago. This
bird was only here one day. Last year I got to watch a male Black-chinned
Hummingbird do his shuttle courtship flight infront of a female Black-chinned
on 5/19. This was done while the female was sitting on my native Plum and
native Mountain- mahogany thicket , I had 1, adult female Black-chinned from
5/16 on in 2011, and then I hada total of 3 female- like, Black-chinned in my
yard the first 3 days of July. I was down to one, f. Black-chinned after this
time. As the end of July approached I had 2, f. Black-chinned Hummingbirds,
etc. I will look again for a hummingbird nest this summer, but It is pretty
impossible to find a nest unless one sees a bird going to it, or one sees an
individual carrying nesting material. Happy Birding!Tina JonesLittleton,
