COBirders, The 22nd Annual Spring Bird Count took place at Fountain Creek Regional Park in El Paso County this morning between the hours of 7 - 11 a.m. Twenty-three birders in 5 teams had some very good birds, but not great numbers. For those of you that know the park, I am giving the Area where the birds were found (Area 1 is at the north end of the park and area 7 is at the south end; the nature center is in area 4). Many of these good birds were found again after lunch. If you have questions, feel free to send an e-mail. Highlights of around 80 species seen follow:
Area 2: Rose-breasted Grosbeak 1-male, 2 females, Summer Tanager 1 male, Indigo Bunting 2-3, Lazuli Bunting 2 male, Ovenbird 1, Yellow-breasted Chat 1, Green-tailed Towhee 1 (all of these seen again in the afternoon except for the chat. Area 3 (Rice's Pond): Green Heron 2, Common Yellowthroat - 2, Sora - 1, Virginia Rail - 2, and 2 Black-necked Stilts reported by a photographer/park visitor Area 4: Swainson's Thrush, Gray Catbird, Great-tailed Grackle, Cedar Waxwing Area 5: Olive-sided Flycatcher 1, Warbling Vireo 1, Clay-colored Sparrow, Lark Sparrow, White-winged Dove 1 (first for park) Area 6: Western Bluebird 1, Orange-crowned Warbler 2, Black-head Grosbeak 1, Chestnut-sided Warbler 1. Area 7: Green Heron 2, Black-chinned Hummingbird 1, Swainson's Thrush 3, Gray Catbird 1, Northern Waterthrush -1, Common Yellowthroat 2, Lincoln's Sparrow 2, White-eyed Vireo 1 (also seen again in the afternoon) Other birds observed on the previous three days include 1 male Hooded Warbler and 1 male Blue Grosbeak in Area 7. Ruby-crowned Kinglet in area 4. If anyone birds the park on Sunday - Tuesday, I'd be interested in your observations for the remaining days for the week of count.
