Greetings
Today, Nick Moore and I started the day at sunrise at Cottonwood Canyon. The birds there (residents/breeders) were surprisingly quiet, perhaps in part due to the cool damp weather. However, we did squeeze out a couple goodies, including an EASTERN TOHWEE and a GRAY VIREO plus an INDIGO BUNTING (all singing birds). At a nearby private ranch in Baca County, we found a BLACK-THROATED BLUE WARBLER singing, as well as AMERICAN REDSTART, YELLOW-BILLED CUCKOO, and 3 LESSER GOLDFINCHES. We then hit the festive Walsh Sewage Lagoons in a drenching rain, where we had some nice Baca County birds including 20 Black Terns and a RN Phalarope. The day's highlight, after another drubbing, was Burchfield State Wildlife area due east of Walsh (on CFO County Birding Site, Baca County). This lovely area, recommended by David Leatherman was not that impressive in the downpour, but after the rain stopped, we heated up, and the birds did as well. In a goodly 2+ hours of walking around this medium-sized, isolated pocket of trees and scrub we found our selves with a site list of 60 species (Killdeer only "waterbird") including the following: WHITE-EYED VIREO PHILADELPHIA VIREO YELLOW-THROATED VIREO WESTERN WARBLING VIREO NORTHERN PARULA BAY-BREASTED WARBLER BLACKPOLL WARBLER NORTHERN WATERTHRUSH AMERICAN REDSTART PINE SISKIN Yes, we understand that these are not all of equal rarity; fortunately the Philly Vireo and BB Warbler were the most cooperative of the lot. We got to Two Buttes rather late in the day, but managed to add TENNESSEE WARBLER and SOLITARY SANDPIPER to our list, bringing our day total to 111 species. We are exhausted and barely dried out, but rather happy.
