Dear Dr. Safran et al.,

There is a Barn Swallow currently completing its nest on the light fixture
outside my door on a third floor apartment in Colorado Springs, the Oasis
Apartments. This is the third consecutive year at least one Barn Swallow has
nested at the same location (2 pairs the last two years). The light fixture
down the hall has had a visiting BARS pair but the pair hasn't started to
build yet. Most of the apartment residents are gone during the weekdays and
there are lots of breezeways with similar light fixtures in the apartment
complex. The women who run the show here are very nice and they might be
willing to let a swallow study occur in the breezeways but maybe not too
since most of the residents don't like bird droppings on the railings.

Cliff Swallows have also started to build nests in and around the apartment
buildings, one on the protected wall on my small balcony. Three years ago,
the CLSWs completed a nest there and the next day a pair of House Sparrows
evicted the swallows. The HOSPs started to visit the same nest last year so
I destroyed it before they laid eggs but the Cliff Swallows are singing away
from the shallow nest they started at the exact location and they are here
every morning for the last week.

Best,

Bill Maynard
Colorado Springs, CO

Subject: [cobirds] looking for breeding barn swallows!

Greetings!

My research group is focused on comparative studies of barn swallows.
We study this species throughout the world with fine-scale, long term
studies ongoing in Colorado. We are always on the look out for additional
populations of barn swallows. If you have swallows breeding on your property
and don't mind supporting our research by allowing us to band and observe
your population, we'd love to hear from you!
Please get in touch by emailing [email protected].

Sincerely

Becca
