Yesterday (all day, that is why the late post), Jeanne and I had a lot of fun birding around Yuma county. While we did not see any of the shorebirds that had been reported at the virtually dry Bonny reservoir, we did get some new birds for the year.
On the west and south side of Bonny we had a Red-bellied WP going in and out of a nest hole, or first two Blue Grosbeaks of the year, and a singing Carolina Wren. We saw a Yellow-billed Cuckoo just a couple of days after we first saw one in Louviers. East of the dam in Hale we saw Red-headed WPs, Orchard Orioles, Baltimore Orioles, and Dickcissels. If you have never birded the Hale hedge rows, we highly recommend it. At the now closed north campground, we had our lunch and saw a Great Crested FC, and more Red-headed WP along with a large contingent of bluebirds. We made our first ever visit to Beecher Island area and it was quite birdy. Lark Buntings galore, Grasshopper Sparrows, Brown Thrasher, Warbling Vireo. Just south of Beecher Island along CR LL we got a single GREATER PRAIRIE-CHICKEN. It was a LIFE BIRD for both of us. We didn't get home to Colo Spgs until after 8pm, so that is my excuse for the late post. Good birding, everyone!
