Today Michelle Durant and I surveyed this great area. It is closed to the
public until July 1, and I was only there with permission from Boulder County
because of participating in the Indian Peaks Bird Count (which means you might
consider participating in this stellar, 30-year study). It was quite quiet.
Birds that I would expect to be there weren't and birds I would expect to see
in large numbers were seen in small numbers. This year we had 264 individuals
as compared to 364 individuals last year, but we only had 48 species last year
compared to 58 species this year. Go figure!! The two nice birds were a
Rose-breasted Grosbeak male, singing. Although it isn't listed on the bird
checklist for the area, a long drive isn't required to see a RBGB because they
have been frequently seen this spring. The other bird was a Three-toed
Woodpecker. It was not seen, but ID'd by it's very unusual drumming pattern.
