Hi All,
Joel and I led the Boulder Bird Club/Boulder County Audubon First Sunday Birding outing at Walden Ponds this morning. The weather, birding, and 40+ participants were all quite pleasant, and we tallied 56 species. Trip list below. Please forgive the archaic taxonomic order, just copying off of the checklist. Pied-billed Grebe American White Pelican Double-crested Cormorant Great Blue Heron GREEN HERON - Possibly two. One flew across Cottonwood Marsh while we were making announcement, and another was seen extremely well later in the day. Canada Goose Mallard Northern Shoveler Gadwall American Wigeon Redhead Sharp-shinned Hawk - One seen briefly by a few people along the Boulder Creek Path behind the water treatment plant. Red-tailed Hawk American Coot Killdeer American Avocet - Two flyovers on the Sawhill side. Spotted Sandpiper Rock Pigeon Mourning Dove Eurasian Collared-Dove Belted Kingfisher Downy Woodpecker Northern Flicker Western Wood-Pewee Cordilleran Flycatcher - Down on Boulder Creek. Say's Phoebe Eastern Kingbird Tree Swallow Northern Rough-winged Swallow Bank Swallow Cliff Swallow Barn Swallow Blue Jay Black-billed Magpie American Crow Common Raven White-breasted Nuthatch House Wren American Robin Cedar Waxwing European Starling Warbling Vireo - Both EASTERN and Western subspecies. Yellow Warbler Common Yellowthroat Blue Grosbeak Song Sparrow Red-winged Blackbird Western Meadowlark Yellow-headed Blackbird Great-tailed Grackle Common Grackle Bullock's Oriole BULLOCK'S X BALTIMORE ORIOLE - One adult male on the backside of Sawhill Ponds. House Finch American Goldfinch House Sparrow NO Marsh Wrens, which really surprised us. Also, stopped at the McConnell Drive-Saint Vrain River bridge afterwards. The Eastern Phoebe reported by Steve Mlodinow wasn't seen, but it is likely still in the area (our stop was extremely brief). We did have it singing yesterday evening (about 5:30 pm) just downstream of the bridge. This is the second Eastern Phoebe we have had at this location, the first was a one-minute wonder in May of 2009.
