COBirders,

This afternoon I made the short trip up to Beulah to see if I could find the
Acorn Woodpeckers seen by Dave Van Manen, Harry Rurup and others yesterday
in Pueblo Mountain Park. I found both of them right away in the tall dead
snag right next to the parking lot in front of the Park's lodge. The snag
is peppered with what appear to be small cavities appropriate for storing
acorns. There are also two three holes that swallows enter, which seems to
bother the woodpeckers somewhat. We (my grandson-in-law and I) could see
the birds quite clearly and as Dave reported, there's no mistaking them.
Two years ago while visiting with Mark Yaeger (a.k.a. Radeaux, the artist of
the first Colorado Breeding Bird Atlas) he predicted that this species would
be discovered soon in the Park as he had seen some evidence of acorn
storage. The Park is visited heavily, and the Environmental Center that
Dave heads has many programs throughout the year. It's about time the
woodpeckers revealed themselves! :-)
