This has been a very unusual year for hummingbirds in my suburban
Broomfield yard.

I have spent the last 12- 15 years trying to attract hummingbirds to my
yard, planting flowers and providing feeding stations attracting more and
more birds. They are rare and brief visitors in the spring until mid May
and then don’t re-appear until after mid-July and stay until mid-September.
This year I didn’t see any spring hummers but have had steady (daily)
visits since about June 6th. Most of the hummingbirds have been Black
Chinned and Broad-tailed. I had my FOS Calliope (adult male) on July 1stand my
FOS Rufous (adult male) on July 6
th. Today I have had an adult male rufous chasing a black-chinned female
from a feeder and have had visits from broad-tails as well. During the hot
weather most of the visits to my feeder were early in the morning or in the
evening. Now as the weather has moderated they are coming throughout the
day.

Put your feeders out because the hummingbirds are here!
